Smart infrared sensors used for fast and accurate remote temperature measurement in printers Fremont, CA - August 30, 2004 -PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, a global technology leader providing market-driven integrated solutions for biomedical and industrial applications, today announced that it has reached an agreement to supply FUJI XEROX with custom infrared sensors for temperature measurement in their next-generation printers. FUJI XEROX will use PerkinElmer's thermopile sensors to make more energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly printers, such as the DocuPrint C2425/C2426. In order to spread toner evenly on paper, printers require a constant temperature of the fuser roller. Traditional contact-based measurement techniques can negatively impact the performance of the fuser roller. FUJI XEROX printers use PerkinElmer's thermopile sensors for monitoring the temperature of the parts without contacting the fuser roller. The thermopile sensor can follow the heating cycles remotely and instantly, enabling the machine to adjust the temperature of the fuser roller quickly to optimize performance. Remotely measuring the temperature enhances the life cycle of the fuser roller and, in turn, significantly reduces maintenance cycles. Additionally, PerkinElmer's modules allow for lower temperatures during printer idle time, saving energy and related costs. They also offer a fast response time of less than 100 milliseconds for printers coming out of stand-by mode. PerkinElmer customized its thermopile module for FUJI XEROX in terms of shape and output signals. The integrated silicon lens design provides a precise measurement spot on the fuser roller, allowing for consistent temperature and superior performance. They feature integrated optics and electronic circuits for signal conditioning and calibration, alleviating the need for end-users to engage in the complicated and timely calibration process. The advanced calibration properties of PerkinElmer's thermopile modules can even be adapted to the special radiation profile of the curved fuser roller surface, ensuring accurate temperature measurement. Traditionally, temperature measurement has been less than accurate due to the curvature of the fuser roller. "Our work with FUJI XEROX illustrates PerkinElmer Optoelectronics' continued leadership in customized solutions for cutting-edge applications where temperature control is critical to performance," said John Murphy, president, PerkinElmer Optoelectronics. "Our new thermopile technologies allow manufacturers of 'smart devices' in the printer, automotive and home appliance industries to commercialize new applications for remote temperature control."
