Miniaturized Flashlamp Vastly Improves the Quality of Still Photography for the Next-Generation Digital Camera Embedded in Kyocera’s A5502K Mobile Phone Tokyo - July 7, 2004 —PerkinElmer, Inc., a U.S.-based global technology leader providing integrated solutions for biomedical and industrial applications, has announced Kyocera Corporation’s adoption of its proprietary flashlamp technology for use in the Kyocera A5502K-model mobile phone. This marks the first time a mobile phone maker has adopted such innovative technology, and represents a dramatic increase in quality of still pictures taken by mobile phones. The flash module embedded in the A5502K is provided to Kyocera by Stanley Electric Co., Ltd. and features both the continuous LED lighting suited to streaming video and PerkinElmer’s miniaturized flashlamp—ideal for high-end digital still cameras of 1 mega-pixel or above. “The mega-pixel CCD camera embedded in the A5502K offers extremely high quality photos, but requires a light source with far more power than that provided by an LED flash,” said Nobuharu Shino, General Manager of Kyocera Yokohama Mobile phone division. “We selected the flashlamp solution because its auto-strobe function enables crisp, high-quality still photographs even in areas that are poorly illuminated.” PerkinElmer’s flashlamps provide a superior light source—projecting up to four times the distance of LED-type flashes currently found in most cameras. Other advantages provided by the flashlamp technology include the more even distribution of light over the subject of the photograph as well as a color temperature close to that of sunlight, or between 5500 K and 6000 K, an improvement on the usual LED color temperature of 8500 K, which results in a blue-tinged light that is less than ideal for still pictures taken by high-end cameras. Flashlamps also produce shorter duration flashes which improve picture sharpness even for moving objects. “PerkinElmer is indeed honored to have its flashlamp technology chosen by Kyocera,” said John Murphy, President of PerkinElmer Optoelectronics. “We are delighted that Kyocera is the world’s first mobile phone maker to adopt a flashlamp strobe solution, and will continue to make efforts to bring our best-in-class manufacturing processes to digital camera makers - to assist them in taking advantage of the many benefits provided by our new flash technology.” While most product offerings in 2003 were mainly 0.3 pixel cameras, demand for higher quality in the mobile phone camera industry is expected to surge in 2004, with the market progressing towards 1.3 mega-pixel cameras and above that offer better quality pictures while requiring higher light output that flash modules alone can provide. PerkinElmer is leading the way in promoting the use of flashlamps among mobile phone camera makers by developing solutions that reduce costs, increase light output while lowering power consumption, and feature better light distribution. One key to achieving these goals is miniaturization, and PerkinElmer’s roadmap includes further efforts aimed at shrinking the size of flashlamps and other components. PerkinElmer will certainly be a driving force in the penetration of this technology as higher mega-pixel cameras become more widespread. These components will enable manufacturers to set higher standards of quality and reliability for today’s mobile camera phone market.
