PERKINELMER OPTOELECTRONICS LAUNCHES DOUBLE-SIDED IMAGING SYSTEM AT JPCA 2004

ProForm® 3200 Series used for UV imaging fills void in narrow web imaging market

JPCA Printed Circuits Expo, Tokyo, Japan —June 2, 2004— PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, a global technology leader providing market-driven integrated solutions for biomedical and industrial applications, today announced the debut of the ProForm® 3200 UV Imaging System, a fully automatic double-sided imaging system for tape substrate and other narrow web flexible circuits.

Additionally, PerkinElmer announced it has formed a cooperative relationship with OHT, Inc., an industry leader in electronics testing solutions based near Hiroshima, Japan, to promote and sell the ProForm 3200 system to manufacturers of tape substrate and other flexible circuits throughout Japan. The companies are working together to respond to the growth in demand for flexible circuits by offering cost effective, easily integrated solutions as an alternative to traditional projection technology.

The market for UV exposure systems is expanding in 2004 due to growth in consumer electronic products such as cell phones, PDAs, MP3s, displays and interconnects applications. The ProForm 3200 is the newest addition to PerkinElmer’s ProForm 3000 Series for flexible circuits imaging and fills a significant gap for the niche market of narrow web imaging applications, such as Tape TAB and Chip of Flex (COF). Manufacturers of flexible circuits realize cost and performance advantages by using highly accurate imaging systems like PerkinElmer’s ProForm 3200 that deliver high resolution and faster production rates.

PerkinElmer’s ProForm 3200 Series will allow customers to achieve precise material control for double-sided imaging on narrow continuous webs from 30mm – 105mm (1.2”- 4.1”). PerkinElmer’s new ProForm 3200 enables end users to eliminate two key processing steps by permitting imaging of double-sided circuit tape, rather than the standard single-sided, and alleviating the need to punch sprocket holes for indexing. Additionally, double-sided imaging doesn’t require second pass processing, which greatly accelerates the production process, minimizes human handling and defects, and promotes higher registration accuracy in top-to-bottom tape imaging.

“PerkinElmer designed the ProForm 3200 Series to deliver the industry’s highest quality double-sided circuit imaging solutions,” said John Murphy, president, PerkinElmer Optoelectronics. “There is significant market opportunity for this technology, particularly in Japan, and we are pleased to cooperate with OHT to help drive the next wave of flexible circuit imaging for consumer-based electronics.”
