Fremont, CA -- October 14, 2003 -- PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, a global technology leader providing market-driven integrated solutions for biomedical and industrial applications, today announced that it has begun shipment of a custom OEM spectrophotometer platform to a global manufacturer and distributor of life science research and clinical diagnostics products. Under the agreement, valued at $1.5 million annually with an expected life of at least five years, PerkinElmer will provide a customized, fully tested, and calibrated spectrophotometer solution. Utilizing its expertise in spectrometer engines, light sources, light management, signal processing and detection, and optics design, PerkinElmer is well positioned to deliver this newly designed product as a “plug and play” and easily integrated subsystem. The platform will be used in various life science applications - including quantification of PCR (polymerase chain reaction) products and DNA for cloning and sequencing, protein assays, monitoring cell culture growth, and spectral analysis. PerkinElmer was selected for its ability to meet product specifications, its superior product performance, and its ability to expedite time to market by complementing critical engineering resources of the OEM partner. “Customers depend on PerkinElmer’s unique ability to design and manufacture precision electro-optical OEM subsystems. Our solutions play a critical role in functional genomics, proteomics, cellomics, clinical diagnostics, and molecular identification,” said John Murphy, president, PerkinElmer Optoelectronics. “This contract further demonstrates our commitment to servicing the demanding OEM market for innovative life science equipment.” PerkinElmer's spectrophotometer platforms are rugged, high performance devices that can be customized for use in analytical chemistry, clinical diagnostics, chromatography, and process monitoring, among other applications. The robust, thermally stable designs utilize high performance optics to minimize stray light and maximize optical performance. The modules include an integrated, miniature UV/Vis or NIR light source that provides extremely stable, high-intensity broadband output to ensure maximum signal to noise ratio, and also feature compact size, high speed, solid state design and RS232/USB interfaces.
