PerkinElmer Optoelectronics Receives Positive Response to New Xenon Lamp Technology

Fremont, CA -- July 31, 2003 -- PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, a global technology leader providing market-driven integrated solutions for biomedical and industrial applications, today announced it has received orders from four global medical lighting companies for its new line of mini-Cermax® Xenon lamps. Launched only six months ago, the mini-Cermax Xenon lamp provides medical lighting manufacturers with long-life, white light (6000 deg K) superior-quality lamps at prices comparable to lower-performing halogen or metal halide systems, and with coveted Xenon technology.

PerkinElmer is a leading supplier for OEM products for endoscopy and microscopy companies, who are striving to make their instruments more compact, lighter and user-friendly. As these medical lighting companies evolve their instruments, they look for partners like PerkinElmer that can design specific components that can support these advancements in medical technology and patient care.

"Manufacturers of medical instruments are demanding cost-effective, bright, white light to produce accurate color solutions, and our miniature Cermax Xenon lamps are ideal for several reasons," said John Murphy, president, PerkinElmer Optoelectronics. "Each of our lamps is designed to fit the specific optical and spatial needs of every customer, and our own design and manufacturing processes produces very customized Xenon solutions in less time and at competitive prices."

Xenon provides the added benefit of being environmentally friendly as it is an inert gas and non-toxic. No organic (carbon-based) materials, mercury, rare-earth elements, or any other materials with disposal problems are used in its construction.

Compared to mercury-based halogen bulbs, which only omit 3200 kelvin in color temperature and limited color quality, xenon allows for 6000 degree kelvin color, true white light and true color rendition. The result for the end user is a less intrusive instrument and the improved color quality allows for more accurate displays of tissue and fields of study during less invasive surgical procedures.

About Cermax Xenon Lamps
PerkinElmer's Cermax Xenon lamps provide a balanced D6500 / D5900 color spectrum and true white light to produce accurate, brilliant colors. For medical companies, benefits include superior color and contrast ratios, which contribute to accurate color contrast, which helps medical professionals in diagnosis.

PerkinElmer Optoelectronics has successfully implemented enhancements to its design and manufacturing processes that enable it to produce high-quality, long-lasting lamp engines at competitive prices. PerkinElmer is working closely with its manufacturing customers to help them reduce design costs, speed time to market, and create competitive advantage.
