PerkinElmer Introduces Next-Generation Climate Control Sensors for Use in Automotive Applications

New Sunload Sensors Will Enhance Safety and Comfort in Autos from Leading Manufacturers

Fremont, CA -- March 4, 2003 -- PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, a global technology leader providing market-driven integrated solutions for biomedical and industrial markets, today announced its next-generation Sunload Sensors to optimize climate control and lighting in "intelligent automobiles" from leading manufacturers, thereby enhancing the comfort and safety of drivers and passengers. Building on more than 20 years of technical innovation in the automotive industry, PerkinElmer's new sensors combine superior performance and quality with customized design to exceed the rigorous requirements of auto manufacturers.

PerkinElmer Sunload Sensors combine two photodiodes, which measure the intensity and direction of sunlight to adjust climate control, with a phototransistor, which controls the interior and exterior lighting systems to make automatic adjustments at dawn and dusk. The Sunload Sensor is inconspicuous in its design and preserves the cosmetic appearance of the instrument panel. Several prominent auto manufacturers use PerkinElmer Sunload Sensors in a variety of their vehicles.

A long history of technological innovation, a wholly-owned off-shore manufacturing plant and uncompromising dedication to quality enable PerkinElmer to deliver high-quality customized solutions to the automotive industry in a fraction of the time and at a very competitive cost compared to other companies. PerkinElmer's QS9000 certification validates the high quality of the Sunload Sensors, and allows PerkinElmer to work directly with auto manufacturers to create custom solutions for specific vehicles. PerkinElmer maintains full design control from sensing chips to components to final sensor assembly, which increases the design speed, improves the quality, optimizes performance, and decreases the cost of customized sensors.

"For more than two decades, millions of drivers and passengers have been safer and more comfortable in their cars thanks to PerkinElmer technology," said John Murphy, President of PerkinElmer Optoelectronics. "As automobiles become more intelligent, PerkinElmer will continue to provide state-of-the-art sensors that meet and exceed the stringent requirements of the world's leading auto manufacturers and help drive innovation."
